Working on my TBR

Well, in between all the storms that have been hitting all around us lately, I've been working on cataloguing all the book in my TBR (to-be-read pile). I must admit it's a monumental task. I didn't realize how many books I had until I started pulling them out and typing them into my Excel spreadsheet where I attempt to keep up with everything. I've found about five books so far that I had duplicates of which is amazing considering that I'm on book number 1,143! The sad thing is, I'm just over halfway done with my collection. I'll probably hit two thousand before I'm done. I blame it on the fact that a lot of the books I enjoy reading are parts of series, and I'm horribly anal about having them all in my possession before I begin reading them. I can't stand to read a book out of order! The best part about my new cataloguing system is that in addition to the title, author, and ISBN#, I've got a column that tells me exactly what shelf on which bookcase the book is stored. It makes it soooo much faster to find the one I need! Anyway, I guess I'm off to work on entering some more before our power blinks again. One reminder when working on computer files... SAVE!

Welcome Back

After a long absence from blog posting, I'm back and hopefully better than ever! I missed having my own little place to journal, write reviews, keep up with my own lists, and share with other readers. So, I've spent the day editing some old posts: throwing out the trash and making notes of what I need to work on. Hopefully a new layout or at least something to jazz this one up a bit as I'm finding it rather dull. Plus I definitely need to make some updates to my various lists: wishlist, TBR, books read, etc. There are also a lot of links to other great sites and resources that I've found that I want to share. All in good time!

HH Series List Wanted

One of my friends from PBS is an avid reader of Harlequin Historicals and I am attempting to compile a completed list of the series from book #1 to the current books being published. I have searched all over the internet for such a list an have been unable to locate one, despite the fact that others seem to be seeking the same thing. Also, I have discovered that there are actually two sets of Harlequin Historical series - the original (HH), and Harlequin Historical Subscription. (HHS) Therefore, I am going to attempt to compile lists here in hopes that others who are searching will be able to find it, or can leave comments contributing to it.

Thanks!

Paperback Swap

I have recently joined the greatest (imo) online paperback exchange ever! The features are amazingly well-organized, and the entire credit system is extremely fair and unbiased. I have already requested, mailed, and swapped over one hundred books and have been thrilled with each completed transaction as they have been smooth and quick with no snags or problems to cause delays. The site also hosts it's own set of forums and chatrooms in which I am currently hostessing my first "game" and have many numerous new friends. Unlike several online book exchanges in the past, this one not only offers membership to people all over the United States, it also include other US territories. The owners/programmers of the site are real people, with real lives who care about the site and it's members. I have actually spoken with one of the founders on an occasion he just happened to "pop" into the chat room I was using. I have also sent them emails with suggestions for the site which were either quickly implemented, or added to their ever-growing "to be added" list. All in all, I could not be more impressed or pleased with the PBS club, and urge everyone with an avid interest in reading to join!

Hard to Follow

Right now things are so busy for me that I am only able to read in the spare few minutes I can create for myself here and there. Usually, I am embarrassed to admit, this time comes in the bathroom...either in the tub or while taking care of other business. LOL Anyway, I am in the process of reading Secret Father by James Carroll. I am 75 pages into it and am still trying to form an opinion. The plot is certainly intriguing, but I AM finding it a little hard to follow in places. It is difficult at times to determine which character is "speaking." Below is an excerpt from the book jacket. If it sounds interesting to you, grab a copy and read it with me! Anyone is welcome to join this blog!

"It is 1961. Khrushchev is hurling threats, a US spy plane has been shot down over the Soviet Union, tensions are rising, Berlin has been cut off from the West: it's only a matter of weeks before the wall will be erected. The United States and Americans abroad face dangers they had never imagined. ------ Three teenagers from an American school in West Germany travel to Berlin to join a May Day rally on the Communist side of the divided city. Propelled by naive ideals and in rebellion against preordained futures, they stumble into the center of an international incident. Paul, the father of one boy, and Charlotte, the mother of another, set off to rescue their children from the East German Stasi, which has detained them. Over the course of a weekend, Paul and Charlotte struggle with personal secrets, growing passion, and the weight of a generation that survived World War II only to face the loss of its children to the engulfing paranoia of the Cold War."

Victorine - A Novel (by Catherine Texier)

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel about a remarkable woman named Victorine. She was "ahead of her time" in her aspirations and actions and because of which, would fit in quite nicely with today's "modern" woman. The novel bounces back and forth between past and present. You learn of Victorine's life story through her memories as she sits on the beach reading an old diary that she had kept in the past. Her tale is one of love, heartbreak, joy and regret - of the one she married...and the one that "got away." I didn't fully absorb the fact that this novel was based on the author's own family....Victorine being her great-grandmother... until I read the "Notes on Victorine" included at the end of the novel. Somehow it slipped by me unnoticed that the author of the book (Cathering Texier) and the character, Victorine share the same surname. This novel was truly an exquisite blend of fact and fiction combined with nostalgia that led me to "feel" to some degree the emotions experienced by the heroine herself. However, I don't know that I would have been able to make the same choices as she.

Devining Women

I just finished reading Devining Women by Kaye Gibbons a few days ago. I wanted to take a couple of days to mentally digest what I had read and form a clear opinion before posting to this blog. However, those few days have now passed me by and I am still left with a cloudy impression. I'm somewhat undecided about how to respond to this selection. Technically speaking, the novel was very well-written in a style that was easy to follow. The storyline flowed smoothly with clear, precise transitions. The character descriptions were unique in the fact that the you get more of a sense of who each "person" IS in behavior and manner rather than the typical physical description...which allowed more freedom to "create" your own version of each character in your mind's eye. In other words...you can relish imagining the eccentric grandfather who practices nudism to resemble that little old man who sits in the same spot on the front pew of your church every Sunday - never speaking a word to anyone. And isn't funny how the cruel husband so closely resembles that jerk you dated once (thank God you didn't marry him). As for the story-line itself....it was interesting. As a woman...it made me angry...both for the heroine and at her for not standing up for herself and how dare her husband treat her that way. As a reader...I was glad for the change in Maureen's character...but somehow the end didn't quite satisfy me. My closing thought was ..."hmmm." I wanted something more. The romantic in me was looking for that "happily ever after" ending where Maureen left the jerk...remarried...had a houseful of beautiful children and lived happily ever after. The bitch in me wanted the husband to suffer.

A New Year, A New Book

Or two new books to be more precise. I have finished both The Photograph and All the Pretty Horses. The latter of which I think I mentioned follows the movie plot (or vice versa) so closely that if you have seen/read one, you have seen/read the other as well. So I am moving on. My next "modern" selection is going to be Devining Women by Kaye Gibbons. Here is the excerpt from the book jacket:

"Autumn, 1918: Rumors of peace are spreading across America, but spreading even faster are the first cases of Spanish influenza, whispering of the epidemic to come. Maureen Ross, well past a safe childbearing age, is experiencing a difficult pregnancy. Her husband, Troop -- cold and careless of her condition -- is an emotional cripple who has battered her spirit throughout their marriage. As Maureen's time grows near, she becomes convinced she will die in childbirth. Into this loveless menage comes Mary Oliver, Troop's niece. The sheltered daughter of a well-to-do, freethinking Washington family, Mary arrives to help Maureen in the last weeks of her confinement. Horrified by Troop's bullying, she soon discovers that her duty is to protect her aunt. As the influenza spreads and the death toll grows, Troop's pitiful behaviors worsen. Tormenting his wife, taunting her for her "low birth," hiding her mother's letters, Troop terrorizes the household. But when Mary fights back, he goes over the edge, and Maureen rallies with a stunning moment of spiritual renewal. In her darkest yet most redeeming novel, Kaye Gibbons scorches us with a firestorm of despair -- then resurrects love and hope from its very ashes."

Book vs Movie

Normally, I'm all about reading a book before I ever watch a movie that is based on it. For the most part I've been disappointed in most of the movies that have been released based on a classic or best-selling novel. Many don't follow the story-line close enough for my liking. Some have entirely different endings, while others leave out vital scenes or even characters. Take the movie Gone With the Wind for instance. If my memory serves me, you are only introduced to one of Scarlett's children - the daughter she shares with Rhett that she eventually loses in an accident. However, in the novel....you are introduced to ALL THREE of Scarlett's children (by three different father's I believe). If that isn't vital to the storyline...I don't know what is. Anyway, this is all background for the point I'm trying to make. I happened to see the movie, All the Pretty Horses starring Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz before I realized that it was based on the same, self-titled novel by Cormac McCarthy. I am about half-way through said novel as of today, and I must admit...I'm enjoying it immensely. As I read, I am also becoming more impressed with the movie and how accurately it portrays the novel. So far, scene for scene...it's an identical representation. When I was in high school and even college, I knew kids who would always rent the movie rather than reading the required selections. They usually ended up failing the exams because the two versions were so different. Unless there is some dramatic change at the end of the novel that differs from the conclusion of the movie, then All the Pretty Horses may just be the one book/movie duo that is the exemption to that rule. In other words...if you don't have time to read this one....rent the movie and go ahead and check it off your list! ;)

The Photograph, by Penelope Lively

OMG!!! If you haven't read this book yet...seriously think about putting it on your reading agenda. It is now 12:24am..as in...just past midnight...and I am sitting here typing this blog entry because I just finished reading that novel and now I can't sleep. I've tried everything (just ask Alan) and still, I can't get it out of my head. While I will admit that there are parts of the novel that tend to get a bit wordy, this is mostly due to the fact that a lot of the context contains "dreamlike" conversations in the form of the memories of each of the main characters. I don't want to reveal anything that is vital to the story, so I'm trying to censor my comments at this point. Let's just say that it is a rather haunting story that has my mind reeling even after having turned the last page. A worthy read for sure.

A "Classic" Case of Procrastination

The list below contains the most "famous" and most often studied literary works ever (according to data taken from college polls and literature examinations). I would like to be able to say that I have read each of these literary masterpieces sometime before I drop dead. (The ones I have read are in red...no pun intended). However, I know that realistically I probably won't accomplish that goal. There are simply too many books that I want to read to limit myself to the "classics" although I will certainly attempt to pick up one now and then.

Welcome

Hi! If you have found this little hideaway...chances are you were invited. There's an even better chance that if you weren't you may be bored to death by the future content! LOL Oh well. I created this blog with the intent to share with other avid readers -- to muse... to share what I'm reading and see what others are reading... basically, to establish my own little "nook" in the world of all things literary. There are no rules. I read what interests and intrigues me across a wide range of genres, in accordance with my mood -- which (as with most women) changes frequently. LOL Anyone who wishes to join in on the journey is welcome! So...grab a cuppa, your favourite throw, and snuggle into a comfy spot. Oh yeah! Don't forget your book!
